The Marea PMS Elixir Gets an Update

From the PMS Elixir being just an idea to supporting thousands of menstruators with their period symptoms, Marea has always had one primary mission: to support women who are experiencing PMS, PMDD and period-related symptoms with the foundational nutrition needed to stop dealing with monthly disruptions.

To make that mission a reality we’re always watching the latest research, listening to our community's experience with the PMS Elixir and looking to continually improve the results of the product. This is something that as a boutique independently-owned supplement company we pride ourselves on—our ability to quickly adapt to our customer needs and the evolving science.

We’re excited to release our first formula update since the PMS Elixir’s launch in June of 2020. After almost 3 years of listening to our customers and partnering with nationwide practitioners working with menstruators every day, there were a few key updates we knew would make the PMS Elixir even more effective.

There are five nutrients that are getting an update in the PMS Elixir 2.0 formula:

  1. VITAMIN C: Reducing dosage to 250 mg
  2. VITAMIN B6: Increasing dosage to 25 mg and updating form to P5P
  3. MAGNESIUM: Updating form to Magnesium Glycinate
  4. ZINC: Increasing dosage to 15 mg
  5. VITAMIN B12: Increasing dosage to 20 mcg

With the reformulation our goal remains the same: pack in as much goodness as possible while ensuring it’s easy to digest and absorb, and still tastes amazing.

While many of our customers experience benefits like more consistent bowel movements, some shared that the combination of magnesium and vitamin C led to loose stools. From this feedback our team decided to reduce the amount of vitamin C to ensure the Elixir works for those even with sensitive digestion and to allow for the increase in other key nutrients. We felt that this was the right nutrient to reduce as it is one of the easier nutrients to obtain from food and although we’re a supplement company—we believe in a food first approach.

B6 has been shown to support many premenstrual symptoms such as cravings, mood changes and bloating. It is also well known for supporting the production of neurotransmitters, hormone metabolism, and reducing histamine which impacts some people with PMS and PMDD. The PMS Elixir previously had 3.4 mg of B6 in the form of pyridoxine hydrochloride. The updated Elixir delivers the active form of vitamin B6, pyridoxal 5’ phosphate (P5P), which is considered to be more efficient and bioavailable since it doesn’t need to be converted in the liver like pyridoxine. We also increased the nutrient level to 25 mg as higher dosages are found to be more effective in reducing premenstrual symptoms. P5P along with magnesium is a synergistic duo that we believe is essential for every person experiencing PMS symptoms.

The new formula delivers the same impressive amount of magnesium, the amount found in about 3 capsules, but switched to a form with superior absorption and less digestive upset—magnesium glycinate. Magnesium glycinate is chelated, meaning the magnesium is attached to the amino acid glycine. In addition to superior absorption and less digestive upset—it has all the benefits of glycine which supports restful sleep, collagen production, glutathione production and creatine production for muscle, bone and brain function. This was top priority since many of our customers' chief complaints are cyclical mood symptoms like anxiety, irritability, depression and insomnia.

We also increased vitamin B12 to 20 mcg to enhance the mood benefits of the Elixir. B12 works with folate and other B vitamins to support red blood cells, the nervous system, and overall mood and energy levels. Since common genomic weaknesses related to B12 metabolism and subpar digestion can impact absorption of this nutrient, we kept the same high-quality methylated format while increasing the amount.

Finally, zinc was boosted by 4 mg because of this mineral’s PMS-reducing benefits like reducing acne, supporting regular periods, reducing period pain and supporting thyroid health and mood. The new dose of 15 mg is nearly double the RDA, but still safely below the tolerable upper limit of 40 mg. We felt like this was the proper dosage knowing that excess supplemental zinc can cause nausea and create imbalances in other nutrients like copper. Our goal is for the product to be as effective as possible while meeting the needs of as many menstruators as possible.

We are excited to continue to provide the most robust and effective multivitamin possible for menstruators. It is part of our core values that we continue to listen and adapt as new research becomes available. If you have any questions or feedback please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Cheers to healthier and happier cycles ahead!

Thank you for listening to your consumers and for this update! I am looking forward to seeing if your new formula will reduce the stomach upset, I have been taking 1/2 dose to avoid that but maybe I will be able to handle your new formula. :)

I have noticed a significant amount of joy and an energy return to my life. Something that has felt so difficult for me to experience in the last few years. I am amazed at the effectiveness of Marea and am so grateful I stumbled upon it.
